Sebastopol’s Fork Roadhouse to start year with Grand Opening

Fork Roadhouse: A few months ago, not long after the short-lived Stillwater Kitchen in Sebastopol closed, Sarah Piccolo of Fork Catering quietly leased the space, nestled in what you could almost call a hollow, on Highway 12 between Sebastopol and Freestone. The Fork catering truck is frequently parked adjacent to the restaurant, and a few times this month the parking lot has been full, with a “sold out” sign near the entrance. On December 20, for example there was a dinner and concert featuring Mike Beck.

On January 1, Fork Roadhouse hosts a Grand Opening celebration, with free mimosas for everyone who shows up in their jammies. As of this writing, we did not have hours; visit or call 634-7575 as the date approaches.

Fork Catering, its truck a popular fixture at cycling and other events, does more than give lip service to the idea of using local foods. The farms and ranches they work with are identified and menu selections evolve as the seasonal harvest unfolds. Sample menus are posted at the Web site.

In the past several years, the space that is now Fork Roadhouse has gone through so many changes in ownership that it is hard to remember them all. In recent years, it has been Two Crows Roadhouse, Saint Rose, Claudio’s and Stillwater Kitchen. For a variety of reasons, none of these incarnations established a firm foothold, despite the appealing space. We’re hopeful Fork will find its home here, in a beautiful setting that is said to have been, many decades ago, a bordello.

The adorable little roadhouse at 9890 Bodega Highway that’s seen a number of restaurants come and go in the last several years is being taken over once again, this time by the highly successful Fork Catering.

Owner Sarah Piccolo says she’ll use the spot for a variety of uses, including her catering kitchen, offering a breakfast and lunch eatery, food truck parking by the side patio for a “quick casual bite” and offering special event space.

Sarah Piccolo of Fork RoadhousePiccolo hopes to be open by November and plans to expand to weekend brunches, dinners and special events in the future. “The concept will be casual, approachable, family friendly, and will definitely support our local farmers, bread bakers, and community,” she said.

One of Sonoma County’s most loved food trucks is parking, at least part time, in Sebastopol, on the way out to Bodega Bay.

Owner Sarah Piccolo plans to use the tiny roadhouse as a catering kitchen, a breakfast and lunch eatery, and will park her popular food truck next to the side patio to serve casual, quick food.

Piccolo plans to open the space in November and says it will be casual, approachable, and family-friendly.

Fork Roadhouse aims to break the curse

It’s hard to keep track of how many restaurants have opened and closed at 9890 Bodega Highway just west of Sebastopol. Five? Six? You know the spot. It’s on the north side of the road and painted a brick-red now. The last business to make a go of it was the short-lived Stillwater Cafe, a restaurant that barely lasted four weeks before it went dark. Chef Sarah Piccolo is hoping the fifth (sixth?) time will be the charm.

Piccolo runs Sebastopol’s Fork Catering and Fork Cafe, and she plans to open Fork Roadhouse at the Bodega Highway location sometime next month. She’ll be open for breakfast and lunch, and dinner for special community events.

“It won’t be anything formal or fancy, just good food,” she says. “Even the farmers will be able to afford it.”

Look for dishes like paella, pork belly fried egg tacos, paninis and burgers. The company’s food truck will be parked out front to offer quick to-go meals.

While some people say the location is cursed, Piccolo disagrees and thinks the right concept just hasn’t come along yet.

“I think it’s a great spot. We really want to make it a community-minded place,” she says.

Meanwhile, the building at her current location at 330 South Main St. has been sold and will become a vegan bakery.

Sarah Piccolo has quite a following from her years as a caterer and a food truck operator, parking her mobile eatery outside top Sonoma County wineries since 2010.

Now, her Fork Catering has parked it as a new, brick-and-mortar shop in Sebastopol.

Like the menu for her truck (which is still out and about, by the way), food leans towards local, healthy, farm-to-table with Mediterranean accents. The European flair makes sense, since Piccolo studied and worked as a chef in Italy and France.

From her nimble fingers come breakfast dishes like an organic polenta and chevre bowl with poached local egg and greens ($6.75), or a breakfast sando stuffed with cheesy eggs and arugula ($5.50), plus nitrate-free bacon for an extra $2.

At lunch, there are daily changing offerings include panini like a grilled Clover cheese with poached egg, roasted sweet pepper puree and caramelized onions on Full Circle Bakery bread ($7.50), soups-du-jour such as carrot-ginger served with griddled bread ($5).

The blue plate specials look particularly appealing, like a breakfast of jasmine rice topped in Shone Farm poached egg, homemade rye bread and arugula flowers, and lunch of griddled naan with coconut curry lentils, local greens, raita and Liberty Duck confit or turkey meatballs ($10).

The truck, meanwhile, can be found at special events across Sonoma County, and is open for catering private parties. The 2001 Ford Grumman features a fully equipped kitchen with 10 burners, two ovens, and the espresso bar. Look for the vehicle, too, at the Rohnert Park Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays, and at Sebastopol Food Truck Thursdays.
